David designs and creates with a flair for the sensible order of nature. With 12 years of design and construction experience, that initial flair for natural settings has broadened into designing English Gardens, Native Plant Landscapes, landscapes with a decidedly Eastern feel, pond and water garden settings and the use of built structure— “Structure defines a landscape. How that structure is defined through built forms as well as plants; makes a successful Landscape. Texture and contrast make landscapes interesting- outdoor rooms, patios and bermed plantings with low maintenance plant material are beautiful in all of our Minnesota seasons.”
Recently David has begun to experiment with more close association of people and their surroundings-- bringing fire, earth, water and stone together and laying it at the feel of his clients. “Touch, feel & smell—these are all sensations that bring the landscaping around a house into focus and complete a clients sense of ‘Home’.”
Growing up in Southern Wisconsin a city kid born of Northwestern Ontario parents provided David with unique opportunity. Undeveloped Lake Country, natural and undisturbed settings of the Northwestern Ontario woods showed David a side of life and nature that he would not have experienced if he had remained in the city. “When I was a child, our family would make trips home to Nipigon, Ontario.”
The son of a Molecular Pharmacologist, David developed a special eye for critical problem solving that he applies to landscape design through a free thinking creativity. “I learned as a boy to take in the whole picture. Being able to spend time in the wilderness of Northwestern Ontario gave me perspective to design and create natural settings.”
I was raised to embrace the outdoors and I still do. I love to play “shinny” or pond hockey. My favorite word is “touk.” When I was a boy my father built my brothers and I an ice rink in the backyard. Now I do the same for my 3 children. Late nights outside in the crisp air are reflective times for me. I Love to coach too. Teaching the game to new children, hoping they will learn to love the spirit of the game as much as I do.
